The Nima Divisional Police Command has arrested Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, the anchor of Onua TV/morning FM’s show in Accra, today, Thursday, December 2, 2021.
He was arrested for making ugly statements against peace and security.
Captain Smart is currently in police custody, according to a statement written by Deputy Superintendent of Police, SGD Juliana Obeng of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service.
“Captain Smart is said to have incited the Ghana Armed Forces against Members of Parliament and called on them to mount an uprising on his morning show on Onua TV, a statement that started the 1994 Rwanda genocide, which killed around 1 million people.
“We need a constructive defiance revolt now that we’ve arrived to this point. Even Ghana’s military surprise me. You are allowed to join Parliament when MPs are being sworn in, but not when they are fooling. “Everyone in this country is quiet,” he repeated.
The statement added that he has been cautioned on the offence of offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace as provided under section 207 of the Criminal Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The National Media Commission (NMC) has issued a warning to Accra-based Onua FM on Captain Smart’s demand for a national uprising.
Captain Smart’s comments were blasted as “unprofessional” and “inciteful” broadcasting in a letter written by the NMC’s Executive Secretary, Mr George Sarpong, and addressed to the company’s CEO on Thursday, December 2, 2021.
“A part of your broadcast expresses concern for the country’s peace and security in a way that necessitates immediate regulatory action,” the statement said, which is copied in full below.
