The Sekondi High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Dorcas Affo-Toffey, a member of Parliament for Jomoro who also happens to be Fantana’s Mother.
The High Court’s commercial division issued an arrest order for the lawmaker for violating the court over dual citizenship.
The warrant was issued after she failed to appear for a contempt hearing on Monday, December 6, 2021.
The warrant was issued because Dorcas Affo-Toffey failed to show evidence of her Ivorian citizenship renunciation, according to the presiding judge, Her Ladyship Sedina Agbemeve.
The court had previously ordered the NDC MP to show documents proving her allegation that she abandoned her Ivory Coast citizenship before running for office in Ghana.
Dorcas Affo-Toffey, on the other hand, appealed the Sekondi High Court’s decision, which required her to present documentation of her renounced dual citizenship in court.
The lawmaker’s lawyers are asking the court to overturn the orders of Justice Dr. Richmond Osei Kyere of the Sekondi High Court, claiming that he “wrongly exercised his discretion in compelling the Appellant (Mrs. Affo-Toffey) to provide her certificate of renunciation of Ivorian citizenship.”or any document evidencing renunciation of citizenship to when the Petitioner failed to establish the necessity for the production of the certificate of renunciation of citizenship or any document evidencing renunciation of citizenship.”
When the MP allegedly failed to appear before the Registrar of the court to provide documentation demonstrating her renunciation of Ivorian citizenship as directed by a Sekondi High Court, a contempt action was filed against her by one Joshua Emuah Kofie from Nuba-Mpataba in the Jomoro Constituency.
The petitioner stated in his affidavit of support that on June 22, 2021, a Sekondi High Court ordered the respondent to deliver the renunciation certificate of her Ivorian citizens within 10 days for examination and copying
