A 32-year-old mason identified as William Agyekum Aka (Ninja) has been sentenced to 18 years in jail with hard labor by the Asamankese Circuit Court for robbery.

According to several reports, Agyekum pleaded not guilty to the crime, forcing the court to have a full trial, which found him guilty and sentenced him.

The prosecutor, Inspector Samuel Appietu Appiah, stated that on November 21, 2020, Agyekum robbed Mr Eric Ogyigya aka Domotey of GH500.00 cash and a Tecno T 484 mobile phone worth GH130.00 at Akyem Asuom in the Eastern Region.

On November 21, 2020, about 8 p.m., Ogyigya went to his brother’s house to eat, following which he decided to rest under a shed at the Asuom Presbyterian Primary School.

Agyekum rushed on him, accompanied by the prisoners Karikari Appau, an auto electrician, and Yaw Peprah, an okada rider, and demanded that he pull out all of the money on him, but the complainant refused.

While the convict, Karikari Appau, had already held the complainant (Mr Eric Ogyigya), Yaw Peprah put his hand into his pocket and forcibly withdrew GH500.00 cash and a Tecno T484 mobile phone before escaping.

Agyekum pounded a stone on the complainant’s head to weaken him, while Karikari Appau grasped to him tightly.

During the incident, the complainant identified and mentioned the name of Karikari Appau, the convict, and questioned him about why he was doing this to him.

When Karikari Appau realized the complainant had recognized him, he took a sharp knife from his body and attempted to stab him in the belly, but he injured his hand instead.

However, Karikari Appau, a convicted criminal, stabbed Ogyigya in the left ear. The complainant raised an alarm, prompting people to come to his aid and forcing the three attackers to escape.

The police caught Karikari Appau and Yaw Peprah on November 22, 2020, brought them to court, and they were convicted after pleading guilty to armed robbery.

On November 29, 2020, at around 5:30 p.m., the police received information that Agyekum was hiding in a residence in Asuom, so they stormed the house, arrested and handcuffed him, and placed him in the bucket of a police patrol vehicle.

Agyekum admitted to being a member of the robbery gang and indicated that he hit the complainant in the head with a stone in his caution statement.
