The Gabon international’s “breach of disciplinary code” at the London club was the reason for his removal as captain, leaving Arsenal in need of a new team captain.

Thomas Partey, Alexandre Lacazette, Granit Xhaka and other midfielders were regarded by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta as the frontrunner and favorites to receive the captain band from Aubamayeng.

According to Arteta, the reasons for dismissing Aubamayeng, are just for the sake of football leadership and other players being selected to be captain.

However, Arsenal have arnnounced midfielder Martin Odegard will be the club’s new captain.

The midfielder competes for the club captaincy with players like Thomas Partey, Alexandre Lacazette, and others.

The 23-year-old originally transferred from Real Madrid to Arsenal in January 2021 on a loan deal before finalizing the transfer in the summer of that year.

Odegaard’s leadership qualities and creative ability made him an immediate asset to the squad.

In 36 Premier League games, he scored seven goals and assisted four as Gunners lose out to rivals from north London Tottenham for a place in the top four.

Odegaard, who made his international debut at the age of just 15, is currently the captain of Norway.

Mikel Arteta, the manager, recently praised the creative midfielder’s leadership abilities.

In Arteta’s own words ;

“Martin has a lot of qualities that we want as a captain… one of them is that he thinks about the team before himself.”

“He had a period at the start where he wasn’t playing, he was the first in training, the last to leave, asking the right questions – why he wasn’t playing, what he had to do – he was always listening, he was always helping his teammates.”

‘His attitude was absolutely phenomenal.’
