He was a British embryologist who achieved distinction for leading the group that cloned a mammal named Dolly, a Finnish Dorset lamb, from an adult somatic cell.
His contributions were recognized with an OBE in 1999 for advancements in embryo development and a knighthood in 2008. Dolly’s birth in 1996 marked a groundbreaking moment as she became the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell.

He pursued studies in animal science at the University of Edinburgh, followed by a PhD in reproductive physiology at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh.
