Roundtree’s career was a tapestry of both large and small screens. In the 1981 film “Inchon,” he shared the screen with Laurence Olivier and Ben Gazzara. On television, he left a lasting mark with his role as Sam Bennett in the groundbreaking series “Roots” in 1977, and later as Dr. Daniel Reubens in “Generations” from 1989 to 1991.

In 1984, Roundtree took on the role of a private detective in “City Heat,” alongside the legendary Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds. Although some of his films in the 1990s didn’t receive critical acclaim, he found success in stage plays during this period.

The early 1990s saw Roundtree becoming a cultural icon with appearances in popular shows like “Beverly Hills, 90210,” where he portrayed Robinson Ashe Jr. He also made a significant impact in David Fincher’s highly regarded 1995 film “Seven.” Roundtree’s return as John Shaft in the 2000 film alongside Samuel L. Jackson reinforced his status as an enduring figure in cinema. He also made guest appearances in several episodes of the first season of “Desperate Housewives” as a morally complex private detective.

His versatility extended to voice acting, where he provided the voice for the title character in the PlayStation game “Akuji the Heartless.”

On television, Roundtree had a leading role as Phil Thomas in the short-lived ensemble drama “413 Hope St” from 1997 to 1998. He also portrayed Booker T. Washington in the 1999 television movie “Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 Years.”

Starting in 2005, Richard Roundtree had notable roles in television series such as “The Closer,” where he played Colonel D. B. Walter, U.S.M.C. (retired), and “Heroes,” where he portrayed Simone’s terminally ill father, Charles Deveaux. His acting talents were further showcased in his role as Eddie’s father-in-law in episodes of “Lincoln Heights.”

In 2019, Roundtree returned to the big screen in the comedy “What Men Want” and reprised his iconic role as John Shaft in “Shaft.” In this film, he played the father of Samuel L. Jackson’s character, acknowledging the connection to the 2000 film where he portrayed Jackson’s Shaft’s uncle. Roundtree also starred in the movie “Family Reunion” in the same year, underscoring his enduring talent and the lasting impact he had on the entertainment industry.

He died on October 24, 2023, at the age of 81, at his Los Angeles residence, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Richard Roundtree had a similar ailment for many years when being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1993.

In announcing his death, Richard Roundtree’s manager, Patrick McMinn said; Roundtree was surrounded by his family in his Los Angeles home on Tuesday afternoon when he died.

“Richard’s work and career served as a turning point for African American leading men in film,” Mr McMinn was quoted as saying by the Hollywood Reporter.

“The impact he had on the industry cannot be overstated,” he added.

He later said: “Breast cancer is not gender specific. And men have this cavalier attitude about health issues. I got such positive feedback because I spoke out about it, and it’s been quite a number of years now. I’m a survivor.”

As fans and loved ones mourn the passing of the Shaft movie star, Roundtree family is yet to reveal the funeral arrangements, including the burial, memorial service, date and cemetery location
