Jonathan Mensah Leaves Columbus Crew, Fans Not Happy After Club Traded Defender To San Jose Earthquakes

Ghanaian footballer Jonathan Mensah has left the Columbus Crew after six years in the American Major Soccer League.

Columbus Crew said in a statement confirming Jonathan Mensah’s departure on Friday, February 10, 2023, that they were grateful to the player for his outstanding service to the club.

‘A leader on the pitch and in our city…A champion on the field and in our community…Our Black & Gold family will be forever grateful for everything you have done for Columbus. A great player and an even better person. Thank you, @Jomens25.’

The MLS side announced Mensah’s new club after trading him to the San Jose Earthquakes: ‘The Crew has traded defender Jonathan Mensah to the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for up to $500,000 of General Allocation Money. The Crew would like to thank Jonathan for everything he has done for our Club’.

Jonathan Mensah joined the club in 2017 from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala and has since risen through the ranks to become captain.

The centre-back signed a one-year extension in 2022, keeping him at the club until December 2023 with an option to extend, but both parties have agreed to part ways.

The 32-year-old won three trophies during his  six years spell with the Columbus Crew club.

Meanwhile, his departure from the club has caused a great deal of pain for the player’s fans, with many football fans expressing their displeasure at why he was traded for the San Jose Earthquakes.
