Karim Benzema Retires From France Team After Argentina's World Cup Win Over ‘The Blues’

French professional footballer, Karim Benzema has announced his retirement from international football after missing France’s World Cup run.

Benzema was sent home, but there was some speculation that he could return for the final after playing a friendly for Real Madrid after suffering an injury on his left thigh before France’s first match at the World Cup tournament.

He reportedly turned down the opportunity to return to Qatar to broke his relationship with manager Didier Deschamps, and has now taken to social media to confirm his retirement from France international team.

Benzema’s shocking announcement comes less than 24 hours after France’s defeat to Argentina, in which Deschamps’ side was denied the chance to win back-to-back World Cups by Lionel Messi’s Argentina.


‘I made the effort and the mistakes it took to be where I am today and I’m proud of it! I have written my story and ours is ending,’ Benzema wrote on Instagram on Monday afternoon, December 19.

Last season, he put in an outstanding performance for Real Madrid, scoring 44 goals in all competitions. He also won the UEFA Champions League and Super Cup with the team, as well as the 2022 Ballon d’Or after defeating Senegalese Sadio Mane with 356 votes to win the European Ultimate prize.

However, Benzema finishes his France career with 37 goals in 97 appearances, but his journey with the national team has been far from smooth since his debut 15 years ago.

Karim in France Jersey did not win a major trophy with the team, including a World Cup trophy when Le Bleus (The Blues) won the tournament after defeating Croatia in the final in 2018.
