After a spectacular night at the Ballon d’Or in Paris, Messi gave an odd speech about Lewandowski when receiving his prize, which took place on Monday, November 29th in Paris, France.
Messi admitted in his statement that the Polish star deserved to win the Ballon d’Or on that night, based on his remarkable performance in the review year, particularly in 2020.
Despite Lewandowski being the favorite to win, the Ballon d’Or award ceremony was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
However, following his outstanding performance in 2021, the prolific attacker was named best forward of the year.
With his remarkable showing throughout the review year, the striker did not go home empty handed after scoring 62 goals for Baryern Munich in all competitions.
When Messi accepted his prize at the ceremony, he stated emphatically that he thought 2019 would be his final year to win it;
“Two years ago I thought it was the last time. People were starting to ask me when I was going to retire but now I’m here in Paris and very happy,” the 34-year old said.
“It’s a special year for me with this Copa America title. It meant a lot to win [1-0 against Brazil in the final] at the Maracana stadium and I was so happy to celebrate with the people from Argentina.
“I don’t know if it’s the best year of my life – I’ve had a long career – but it was a special one with the title with Argentina after the tough times and the criticism.”
