Government of Ghana spent GH¢58 million to support the Black Stars’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has disclosed.

Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday July 23, 2026, Ato Forson explained that the expenditure formed part of the government’s approved budget for national programmes, including Ghana’s participation in the prestigious global football tournament.

According to him, the disclosure reflects the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the management of public funds, 3news.com reports.

“To support Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an amount of GH¢58 million has been paid,” the Finance Minister told Parliament.

He added that the government considered it important to openly account for major expenditures made under the 2026 Budget to ensure that Ghanaians remain informed about how public resources are being utilised.

“In the spirit of transparency and accountability, allow me to lay before this House a clear account of some of the expenditure we have made so far in support of government programmes and sectors approved in the 2026 Budget,” Dr Forson stated.

The Black Stars’ campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most impressive performances in recent years.

Under the leadership of experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, the team surpassed expectations by progressing from a competitive group stage to reach the newly introduced Round of 32 in the expanded 48-team tournament.

Although Ghana’s journey ended at that stage, the team’s resilience, discipline, and determination earned praise from football fans both at home and abroad.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson says the Government of Ghana spent GH¢58 million on the Black Stars' 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign during an official briefing.

The campaign also marked Ghana’s successful return to the world’s biggest football competition after securing qualification for the tournament hosted across North America.

Overall, Ghana finished 24th among the 48 participating nations, a respectable achievement that reflects the steady progress of the national team.

The performance has renewed optimism about the future of Ghanaian football and strengthened confidence in the country’s ability to compete on the international stage.

The Finance Minister’s disclosure is expected to contribute to ongoing public discussions about government spending on sports and the importance of ensuring value for money.

While the GH¢58 million investment has attracted public attention, many observers believe the Black Stars’ commendable performance at the World Cup brought pride to the nation and reinforced Ghana’s reputation on the global football stage.
