Former Ghana Black Stars captain, Andre “Dede” Ayew has finally explained how he took the captain’s band from former Ghanaian international, Asamoah Gyan.
According to him, he waited patiently for his turn to lead the team, serving as deputy to top scorer for the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan for six years before fully assuming the position.
Dede Ayew made these revelations while speaking at a guest lecture at the University of Ghana where he acknowledged that the captaincy is always a subject of debate in Ghana, but emphasized the importance of preparation and understanding the country’s mentality.

“I was already Asamoah’s assistant for about six years…so you just need to prepare yourself and learn from Asamoah,” he said.
The Black Stars captain encouraged leaders to brush off criticism and focus on their responsibilities, saying, “You let it brush off like nothing and you move on.”
Ayew’s appointment as captain in 2019 ended a reported longstanding battle with Asamoah Gyan over the captaincy which is still a debate on various online platforms.

Ayew stated that he was well-prepared for the media scrutiny that came with the captaincy, having learned from Asamoah Gyan and senior players.
He advised future leaders to be prepared for the scrutiny, saying, “Anybody who is going to be the leader should be ready for that because you can’t take it away.”
