Ghanaian musician Pop Skinny asserts that he currently works as a truck driver in the United States after relocating there.
He made this disclosure in a recent interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, when addressing Ghanaian artistes’ departure to the west.
The rapper states that the creative art systems in Ghana do not work, making it financially difficult for musicians.
According to Pop Skinny, most Ghanaian artists achieve success through popular songs rather than creative arts, which leads to starvation.
“If you don’t have a hit song, you will go hungry,” he said.
He emphasises how supporting a musical production, including video shoots, has become difficult due to a small profit despite huge investments.
“Even if you save money, you’ll end up using the savings for paying music videos, and other logistics. Even if you get endorsement deals, how often will they come? Not everyone gets it too.”
Pope Skinny strongly opposes the Food & Drugs Authority (FDA) ban on alcohol endorsement by celebrities, recently upheld by the Supreme Court.
“It doesn’t make sense to me,” he exclaimed, noting the immense financial benefits celebrities received in the days before the 2015 ban as quoted by GhanaWeb.
He mentioned some of the top local alcohol beverage brands, testifying of the helpful deals they gave to him and others, and the events they organised or sponsored, keeping the entertainment industry vibrant and productive.
“Since the leaders don’t really think about our welfare in this country, we’ll leave and go do jobs that may be below us – at least no one will see as doing it.”
In confirming his new career adventure and what he does for a living after music, Pop Skinny said “I drive a big truck in America… I cannot do it in Ghana because I will be mocked.”
Pop Skinny is best known for his rapping abilities and his association with dancehall musician Shatta Wale in the Shatta Movement Empire.
Following his separation with Shatta Wale and his dismissal from the SM Group, he relocated to America.
Prior to it, the two teamed to release a couple of tracks together, which featured Ex-Militants Group peers, including Addi Self, Joint 77, Natty Lee, and Captan.
