Asamoah Gyan, a former Ghanaian football player, has expressed his disappointment with the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) treatment of him following his party affiliation.
The ex-Black Stars captain stated in an Instagram live video session on Thursday, January 2, 2025, that his association with the political party lost him the respect from fans and followers.
According to Asamoah Gyan, the NPP leveraged his popularity and influence to garner votes during the campaign but abandoned him along the way.
Gyan claims that his endorsement for the NPP was purposeful and significant because of his charitable efforts with youths.
He emphasises that his involvement with the party may have provided him with additional assets and resources, relieving him of the responsibility of assisting the youths.
You may recall that, before the 2024 elections, Asamoah Gyan joined the NPP campaign team in Kumasi where he rallied his support to the party urging Ghanaians to vote for the party.
During the rally, Baby Jet was seen on stage with Dr Bawumia praising the good works of the NPP for their 8th term in the office.
He was even appointed as the head of the Youth and Sports division within the NPP’s manifesto sub-committee led by Bawumia.
Asamoah Gyan later expressed his deep admiration to the veep claiming he was willing to accept his offer to be his vice president.
However, the footballer now regrets the move, claiming that it damaged his reputation.
He also discussed how his venture into politics alienated some of his supporters, who may have perceived his affiliation as polarising.
“They just used me for their votes and dumped me, I lost respect when I joined them because the party were aware that people were not happy about them” — he passionately said
