Following the tragic death of 12 people during an exercise at El Wak Stadium in Accra earlier today, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) stopped recruitment for 2025-2026.
According to GAF, the decision to suspend the ongoing screening is intended to maintain safety measures and allow the Board of Enquiry to investigate the incident.
The postponement comes after the State Military Organisation issued an official statement on Wednesday, November 12, updating on the devastating event.
Prior to the start of the exercise, thousands of applicants formed a long queue.
Preliminary findings show that the stampede was caused by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and pushed through gates before the scheduled screening.
This move resulted in numerous casualties, including six confirmed deaths and others currently seeking treatment at a local hospital.
“The unfortunate incident led to the death of six potential recruits and many others injured,” the statement said. Those injured are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra” — GAF states.
In announcing the suspension of the 2025 recruitment, GAF says;
“The Ghana Armed Forces deeply regrets to inform the general public that due to the fatal incident that occurred at the El-Wak Sports Stadium this morning, Wednesday 12 November 2025 as part of the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise, the exercise in Greater Accra has been temporarily suspended. This is to allow for additional measures to ensure a seamless exercise”.
Despite not revealing the continuation of the exercise, the security forces expressed regret for the unfortunate event and extended support to the victims of the El Wak Stadium screening applicants.
“The Armed Forces deeply regrets any inconvenience this suspension may have caused the general public, particularly affected applicants. Applicants will be informed of the date of resumption of the process later.”
