The Confederation of African Football (CAF), Africa’s football governing body, has demanded that Akwesi Appiah step down from one of his two current positions before Ghana’s upcoming AFCON qualifier against Sudan.
Akwesi Appiah, who was appointed head coach of the Sudan national football team in 2023, is also serving as the Technical Director of Asante Kotoko, a role he has held since 2020 after being dismissed as head coach of the Black Stars.

CAF’s statement comes due to Appiah’s dual position as both a council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Sudan’s head coach, which the organization sees as a conflict of interest.
In a letter dated Sunday, October 6, CAF officials highlighted that Appiah’s holding of these two roles violates both the CAF Statutes and the FIFA Code of Ethics.
The letter was issued just four days before Ghana faces Sudan in a crucial AFCON 2025 Group F qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 10.
CAF emphasizes that Appiah’s immediate resignation from one of his roles is necessary to “preserve the integrity of this the AFCON qualifiers.”
The organization has given him until Tuesday, October 8, 2024, to submit a formal letter confirming his decision to relinquish one of the positions.
The statement further warned that failure to comply would result in the matter being referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for further action.
