Christian Atsu Biography
Christian Atsu is a professional Ghanaian footballer who plays in the midfield. He was born on January 10, 1992 in Ada Foah, Greater Accra Region, and died in Turkey on February 18, 2023. Atsu, who was a twin brother to his sister, Christiana grew up in a very big family and was raised by his mother Madam Afiko who died in October 2020 after suffering from short illness. His father, Immanuel, died when the footballer was 12 years old, causing his family to struggle to afford him attending school and making his dream a reality.
The midfielder who real name is Christian Twasam Atsu began his football career with Porto in Portugal, where he quickly rose through the youth academy ranks before making his senior team debut in 2010. Atsu won two Primeira Liga titles and advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals during his time at Porto. Despite his success on the field, Atsu struggled to find consistent playing time and was eventually loaned out to several clubs, including Rio Ave, Eibar, and Bournemouth.

On Monday Ferbruary 6, 2023, it was reported that, Christian Atsu was trapped and missing along side his Sporting Director Taner Savut after club players and staff had been rescued from a massive earthquake in Turkey which killed over 1500 people in the country.
With fewer than five earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater occurring each year on average globally, Monday’s earthquake was rare and the most powerful of seven to hit Turkey in the past 25 years.
On February 7, 2023 multiple reports alleged that, Atsu was found alive and was rescued from the rubble and transported to a hospital after suffering injuries to his right foot and difficulty breathing.
In the early hours of Friday, February 17, 2023, the rescue and search team for the Turkey earthquake found Christian Atsu’s government-issued passport after 13 days gone missing under the rubble.
A report from Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng who reveled on the Crime Check Foundation’s official YouTube channel that he obtained an official statement from Atsu’s club Hatayspor, which was confirmed by CCTV footage taken before the earthquake.
In the report, Ibrahim said : “Christian Atsu managed to get out of the first earthquake at 4:17 am on February 6, 2023 because he had not slept at that time. He later ran to the parking garage to get his car out and it was during that period (20 minutes later) that the Reinessance building totally collapsed.
Christian Atsu Death
On Saturday, February 18, 2023, a Turkish agent confirmed Atsu’s death after his body was discovered lifeless under rubble after 13 days.
According to a statement issued by his club Hatayspor, preparations are being made for the player’s body to be sent to Ghana for burial after being found dead under the rubble of Turkey’s earthquake.
“The funeral of our football player Christian Atsu, who lost his life under the rubble ( debris), is on his way to be sent to his hometown, Ghana. We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person. There are no words to describe our sadness. REST in PEACE ATSU”-he said in a statement.
Former clubs of Ghanaian winger Christan Atsu also pens emotional tribute to the player following his death.
Newcastle United, Everton, Chelsea, Bournemouth, Malaga, and FC Porto have all paid tribute to him via their social media handles.
Christian Atsu Mortal Remains Arrive In Ghana
Christian Atsu Mortal remains arrive in Ghana on Sunday, February 19, 2023, after being sent by Hatayspir club officials to Kotoka International Airport at 8 p.m. and was received by Vice President Dr. Mohamadu Bawumia, who stated that “the state will be fully involved in providing a befitting burial” for Christain Atsu during the handling over.
The Military clergymen were seen holding the coffin draped with National flag while placing it in the Center and prayers were being offered to the body to pay it final respects.
The body of former Ghanaian footballer was sent to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra before officially handled over to the family for the burial and memorial services.
Christian Atsu One Week Celebration
On March 4th, 2023, the one-week memorial service for the deceased Black Stars player, Atsu, began, with several former teammates, football stars, and entertainers in attendance. Government officials also attended the one-week celebration and presented the aggrieved family with gifts and cash.
