With Zell am See he was promoted to the regional league in 2004. In 2005 he went to the national league club SV Grödig. In 2006 Freund moved to SC Leogang, where he ended his career in 2013.
Freund became team manager of FC Red Bull Salzburg in 2006. In the winter of 2012 he became sports coordinator. For the 2015/16 season he succeeded Ralf Rangnick as sports director.
