Coco Gauff Parents: Meet Corey Gauff (father) & Candi Gauff (mother) – Cori Dionne Gauf also known as “Coco” is a professional tennis player who is currently the youngest tennis American women’s US Open champion since Serena Williams in 1990.

Who is Coco Gauff?

Coco Gauff began playing tennis at the age of six, but it wasn’t until she was eight that her passion for the sport became fully realised.

Tennis was initially more solitary for her than team sports, but her passion intensified once she competed in the ‘Little Mo’ competition at the age of eight. She made the decision to devote her life to tennis.

Coco began practising at the Mouratoglou Academy in France at the age of ten, which is overseen by Serena Williams’ longtime coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

Coco’s commitment and potential were recognised by Mouratoglou, who helped her through his Champ’Seed foundation, which is aimed to assist talented young players who lack financial resources for high-level training.

Coco Gauff achieved tremendous things at an early age. At the age of 10 years and 3 months, she became the youngest champion in the history of the USTA Clay Court National 12-and-under event.

Coco Gauff began her professional tennis career in May 2018 at the age of 14, when she qualified for Osprey’s $25K event on the ITF Women’s Circuit.

This was her maiden pro triumph. Later that year, she was granted a wildcard entry to the US Open, although she was defeated in her first match, only five months after turning 14.

She made her WTA Tour debut at the Miami Open in March 2019. Her breakthrough came up at the 2019 Wimbledon, when she got a wild card into the qualifying draw and became the tournament’s youngest player to qualify for the main draw.

She gained notoriety by defeating the famous Venus Williams in the fourth round. She reached the third round of the US Open that summer.

Gauff won her maiden WTA Tour singles championship at the 2019 Linz Open at the age of 15 years and seven months, becoming the Tour’s youngest singles title holder since 2004.

Coco made history again in 2021, making her first major final in women’s doubles at the US Open and her first major singles final at the French Open in 2022.

In 2023, she won her first WTA 1000 title at the Cincinnati Masters, as well as her first major singles championship at the US Open.

She is currently ranked No. 6 in the world in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and has held the top slot in doubles throughout her career.

In 2019, during her remarkable Wimbledon journey, Coco’s parents, exemplifying positive sports parenting, were seen teaching their then-15-year-old daughter the importance of maintaining a positive body language on the tennis court.

“Cheer yourself on and have good body language,” Corey Gauff said he taught his daughter in training. “When you’re frustrated with yourself, you can’t perform. Not just in sports, but in life. If you’re always frustrated, you can’t be at your best.

Coco Gauff’s triumph over Venus Williams at the 2019 tournament was a testament to the valuable guidance and wisdom imparted by her father. During a post-match press conference, she openly credited her dad for instilling in her the belief that greatness was within her reach.

“I’ve said this before; I want to be the greatest. My dad told me I could do this when I was 8, and obviously, you never believe it. I’m still not 100 percent confident, but you have to say things and believe in them and see what happens,” she said— as quoted by today.com
