Darren Fletcher has been appointed as an interim coach following Ruben Amorim’s sacked by Manchester United Football Club management to end the Portuguese coach’s 14-month tenure at Old Trafford, according to reports.
The club’s decision to pick Flecher as caretaker and part ways with Amorim comes after Manchester United drew 1-1 against Leeds on Sunday in the 2025/2026 Premier League, moving them to sixth place.
The move was spearheaded by club’s leadership including chief executive Omar Berrada and Director of football Jason Wilcox, AOL reports.
Amorim was dismissed on Monday, January 5, after 14-months following the club’s statement released to officially announced his departure.
He is noted for playing three back information, since joinng Manchester United in November 2024, replacing Ten Hag.
The former Sporting Club boss was heavily criticised by fans for his tactical style on the pitch, which they claimed was not producing results for the club.
Amorim has played 63 matches in all competitions, winning 25, drawing 15, and losing 23 since taking over Manchester.
Amorim signed Senne Lammens (Rolal Antwerp), Patrick Dogu (Lecce), Manuel Ugarte (Famalicao), Matheus Cunha (Wolves), Bryan Mbuemo (Brentford), and Benjamin Sesko (Leipzig).
He led the squad to the final stages of the UEFA Conference League, but was defeated (1-0) by Tottenham Hotspur.
A club statement said: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
Before taking the job, Flecher was under-18s coach at Manchester United where he spent majority of his playing time there.
He joined the club when he was 11 years old playing for the youth setup and various ranks during his time.
Fletcher as a player retired at at age 34 in 2019 over Chronic illness as won 13 trophies including five Premiere League titles and UEFA champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson.
He played for Wes Bromwich and Stoke City after a lengthy spell at Manchester.
Prior his appointment, numerous coaches, including Xavi Hernandez, Darren Fletcher, Eddie Howe, and others, are favorites to succeed Amorim as Manchester United boss, however the management chose Fletcher, who is more familiar with the team’s playing style.
