From Harbor City, California, Canales playing days were at Carson High School where he played the roles of wide receiver and defensive back. At Azusa Pacific University, a Christian liberal arts college of which he graduated with a degree in business administration in 2002, he had 27 receptions for 293 yards and one touchdown as a college football player.
Beginning his career as a coach, Dave Canales took the positions of freshman/sophomore head coach and offensive coordinator from 2004 to 2005. His college coaching career then moved on to El Camino College in 2006 where he played a role as a tight ends coach as well as special teams coordinators promoting to be the quarterbacks’ coach at the end of his last season while picking up championships and titles for the side.
