Beginning his career as a coach, Canales took the positions of freshman/sophomore head coach and offensive coordinator from 2004 to 2005. His college coaching career then moved on to El Camino College in 2006 where he played a role as a tight ends coach as well as special teams coordinators promoting to be the quarterbacks’ coach at the end of his last season while picking up championships and titles for the side.

His connection with Pete Carroll led him to USC in 2009, where he served as an assistant strength coach for one season. The years to follow saw Canales accompany Carroll to the Seattle Seahawks in 2010 to win a Super Bowl title in as they served in multiple capacities on the offensive side of the ball. Notably, he played a key role in the resurgence of Geno Smith’s career during his time with the Seahawks.

He assumed the position of the offensive coordinator of Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023 after replacing Byron Leftwich. He later became a head coach of Carolina Panthers on 25th January 2024, finally marking his new achievement in his career as a coach.
