Edwin Van der Sar is a Dutch football manager and former professional player who most recently as managing director of AFC Ajax. Van who started his professional career in the early 1990s is recognized as a member of the club’s golden generation and a member of Ajax squad that won Uefa Champions League in 1995. He left Ajax in 1999 and moved to Juventus, where he stayed for two years before moving to England, first to Fulham and then to Manchester United in 2005.
In 2008, he won his second Champions League title with the club, becoming one of only eight players in history to win multiple titles. He retired from professional football in 2011, but returned in 2016 to play for Dutch amateur team VV Noordwijk, where he played as a child. He made 130 appearances for the Netherlands national team and was the country’s record holder until 2017, when he was surpassed by Wesley Sneijder.
He is also one of the most successful players in history, winning 26 major trophies throughout his career, most with Ajax and Manchester United. In the 2008-09 season, he set a world record by keeping a clean sheet in 1,311 minutes in the league. He won the title in 2011 at the age of 40 years and 205 days, making him the oldest Premier League winner. Van der Sar has won numerous individual awards, including Best European Goalkeeper in 1995 and 2009 and UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year in 2009.
On July 7, 2023, the Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper, was reportedly to have suffered from brain haemorrhage which the legendary player was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Ajax reacting to the sad news issued a statement: “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition. Once there’s more concrete information, an update will follow”
