Erik ten Hag, born on February 2, 1970 in Haaksbergen, Netherlands, began his football career as a youngster, playing for FC Twente as a defender in the Eredivisie.

He moved to De Graafschap after two seasons before returning to his boyhood club Twente and then to RKC Waalwijk, where he lasted only one season before going to Utrecht in 1995.
