Connick changed his life when he became a civilian member of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Connick became known as “The Singing District Attorney” after establishing himself in the New Orleans music scene.
In 1973, he defeated Jim Garrison, the incumbent New Orleans District Attorney. Legal challenges included Connick v. Myers, which took the mayor to the United States Supreme Court over a free speech issue when one of his employees was sacked.
While he ran unsuccessfully for higher office and dealt with numerous legal controversies, Connick remained involved in New Orleans’ cultural landscape.
In 1993, he co-founded the Krewe of Orpheus while also partaking in Mardi Gras. In 2003, Connick declined to run for reelection and was inducted into the Louisiana Political Museum and Hall of Fame.
However, allegations of prosecutorial misconduct and wrongful convictions marred his tenure as district attorney. The Innocence Project recorded 36 cases of prosecutorial misconduct that resulted in overturned sentences during his time in office.
The case of Shareef Cousin is particularly relevant, as evidence was concealed that put him on death row as a result of a false conviction at age 16.
In 2007, a judge ruled John Thompson had been denied his constitutional rights and awarded him $14 million for lost time on death row. The Supreme Court would reverse this in Connick v. Thompson citing the rarity such violations occur.
Further inconsistencies included charges of delaying prosecutions, most notably on the Dino Cinel case, and also reinvigorated attention on Thomson’s legacy.
