In 2020, he won the Tamale South constituency by a landslide, despite the fact that the NDC failed to gain power from the NPP in the same year’s national election.
He previously served as Minister of Communications from 2009 to 2013, and Minister of Trade and Industry from 2013 to 2014.
His political CV and archives were further enhanced when he was appointed Minister of Employment and Labour Relations in 2014, a position he held for three years.
Haruna was elected as a minority leader during that period, however his reign came to an end when the NDC changed leadership and replaced him with Cassiel Ato Forson in January 2023.
