Haruna Iddrisu was born in Tamale, Ghana, on September 8, 1970, and began his political career at a young age. He was a football fan growing up in the city of Tamale, in Ghana’s northern region, with his parents.

Haruna Iddrisu’s political career began in 1996, during his final level 400 at Legon. During that time, he played a major role in student politics, eventually becoming president of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS).

He developed more interest in politics after years of serving as a school leader, propelling him into mainstream national politics and rose to become the National Youth Organiser for the NDC in 2002.

Haruna Iddrisu won the Tamale South constituency in 2004 and became a member of parliament (MP).

In 2008, while his party was in opposition, he retained his seat with 78.2% of the total votes cast.

In the 2012 parliamentary elections, he kept his seat with 74.6% of the total votes cast.

Despite his party’s loss in the Presidential Elections, Haruna retained his seat in the 2016 Elections and was chosen to lead the minority caucus as the Minority Leader of Ghana’s 7th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

In 2020, he won the Tamale South constituency by a landslide, despite the fact that the NDC failed to gain power from the NPP in the same year’s national election.

He previously served as Minister of Communications from 2009 to 2013, and Minister of Trade and Industry from 2013 to 2014.

His political CV and archives were further enhanced when he was appointed Minister of Employment and Labour Relations in 2014, a position he held for three years.

Haruna was elected as a minority leader during that period, however his reign came to an end when the NDC changed leadership and replaced him with Cassiel Ato Forson in January 2023.

John Mahama nominated Haruna Iddrisu as the Minister of Education designate during the ministerial appointment in the 9th Parliament on Thursday, January 16.
