Herbert Wigwe and his business partner Aigboje Aig Imukwede acquired Access His Bank in 2002, laying the groundwork for the bank’s dramatic rise in Nigeria’s banking industry.

Under his time in office, Access Bank rose from 65th to 4th largest bank in Nigeria, cementing its position as a market leader.

Mr Wigwe’s achievements extend beyond Access Bank, where he served in various leadership positions positions such as Chairman of Access Bank Ghana Limited, Access Investments & Securities Limited, and Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS).

At the time of his death, he was the Chairman of Access Bank (UK) Limited and a director of the Nigerian Mortgage Refinance Company.

Wigwe received a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Nigeria, a Master’s degree in Banking and Finance from the University College of the North (formerly Bangor), and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Financial Economics from the University of Nigeria. Nigeria, London

He passed away at age 57 in an helicopter crash in Nipton, California alongside with five others including his wife, son and cherished college on February 9, 2024.
