In 2006, he received his baccalaureate in series D and entrolled at the University of Ouagadougou (now University Joseph Ki-Zerbo) where he studied geology. 

Traoré was involved in student organisations throughout his undergraduate career, most notably the Association Nationale des Étudiants du Burkina (ANEB), which was recognised for its Marxist leanings, and the Association of Muslim Students. He graduated with honours in 2010. 

Ibrahim Traore began his military career in 2009, when he joined the Burkina Faso Army. He attended the Georges Namoano Military Academy in Pô and graduated as the vice-major of his class. 

In 2012, he received his first promotion as a Second Lieutenant, which indicated a significant advancement in his career.

Due to his commitment and dedication and Traore advanced to Lieutenant in 2014 before achieving the rank after 6 years of being in the service.

He actively participated in anti-terrorism operations, including 2017 missions in Djibo under Lieutenant-Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba and 2019’s Operation Otapuanu. 

In March 2022, he was appointed artillery commander of the 10th Regiment of Command, Support, and Support (RCAS), which is based in Kaya. 

Captain Ibrahim Traore’s path to power began on September 39, 2022, when he organised a coup that overthrew then-interim President Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. 

His coup was led by the realisation that there was a deteriorating security situation and unmet commitments that had no impact on Burkina Faso’s citizens.

Traore became interim president when Damiba resigned on October 2, 2022. After taking office, he became the world’s youngest president of the state at the age of 34.
