Growing up on a farm gave Iris an opportunity to spend time exploring Manhattan, and she especially adored Greenwich Village. 

At childhood, she started the collection from different countries, a thing that would eventually shape her future.

She was an art history major at New York University and also attended art school at University of Wisconsin.

When I was younger, Iris was a copywriter for Women’s Wear Daily and over time improved her skills in scouring for rare treasures while being a designer’s assistant for Elinor Johnson. She also aided Robert Goodman, the illustrator.

In 1948 she married Carl Apfel and they founded Old World Weavers textile house in 1950. They focused on recreating fabrics from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, having the opportunity to visit Europe twice a year, to collect rare textiles.

The fame of Iris Apfel as a textile artist continued to grow. Along with it, she participated in numerous art restoration projects, that culminated in the restoration work at the White House for nine presidents, ranging from Harry S. Truman to Bill Clinton. 

The White house contract was one of the simplest works, because they usually wanted to copy the existing designs.

In her retirement, Iris was famous for her 2005 exhibiting at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.   

The showcased displayed her humongous jewelry collection, intended for the dresses on the dummies that she would wear herself.

Her fashion sense was very universal and unique to others, and that is why she became an icon. She was 97 years old and has IMG as agent, ignoring the age-related stereotypes.

The documentary film Iris, directed by Albert Maysles, in 2014, presented a live image of her bright character and individuality in fashion.

Iris Apfel has been much more than a fashion dictator; she is synonymous with freedom, courage and a zest for life. Her influence on the realm of fashion and self-expression will always lend itself to inspire coming generations.

She passed away on Friday March 1, 2024 in Florida, United States. However her cause of death has not been revealed, according to the announcement on her instagram page.
