In 1993, Lew joined the Clinton administration as a Special Assistant to the President and continued to take on various roles, including associate director for legislative affairs and deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget. He eventually became the agency’s director from 1998 to 2001. Following his tenure in the Clinton administration, Lew served as the executive vice-president of operations at New York University from 2001 to 2006 and then as the COO at Citigroup from 2006 to 2008.

During the Obama administration, Lew served as the first Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources from 2009 to 2010, before returning to his former post as OMB Director from 2010 to 2012. He then assumed the role of White House Chief of Staff for the remainder of President Barack Obama’s first term from 2012 to 2013.

On January 10, 2013, during Obama’s second term, Lew was nominated to replace retiring Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, confirmed by the Senate on February 27, 2013, and sworn in the following day, serving until the conclusion of the Obama administration. Lew’s successor as Secretary of the Treasury was Steven Mnuchin.

Since 2017, Jacob Lew has been a managing partner at Lindsay Goldberg, a private equity firm headquartered in New York City. Additionally, he currently serves as a visiting professor at the School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University.
