Born in Montebello, California, United States Jack Russell begun his singing career at an early age during his high school days.
He made a name for himself after meeting Guitarist in 1977, before the two created the “Great White Band.”
The two rose to prominence under the band names Highway and Livewire before their then-manager, Alahn Niven, rebranded them as Great White. Russell faced numerous controversies during his time.
He was arrested and sentenced to eight years in prison in 1979 after shooting a live-in maid during an attempted robbery.
Despite the band’s lack of his presence, Kendall, the guitarist, teamed up with Russell once the vocalist was released after serving 18 months of his sentence, Variety.com reports.
The Great White band rose to prominence with the addition of drummer Gary Holland and bassist Lone Black following the recording and release of “Out of the Night” on Niven’s record label Aegean.
The band signed with Capitol/EMI, where they had their best-selling album, “Once Bitten,” released in 1987, before splitting and joining labels such as Zoo.
This caused some problems inside the band, which worsened after Kendall announced his split, forcing other members to leave completely.
Russell, while having a great career by selling solo records in his future years, had his dream cut short due to the band’s full disintegration after rejoining with Kendall in 2003.
He began performing at Station nightclubs, where he was involved in a catastrophic incident when fire broke out after his band’s pyrotechnic sparks ignited an unapproved foam soundproofing material applied to the walls and ceiling around the stage.
