Kerr began running with the Edinburgh Athletics Club in his hometown when he was eight years old.

Josh Kerr became more interested in athletics when he was 16 years old, when he began to seek out Athletics coaches as personal trainers in order to compete in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).

Despite multiple criticisms, a coach (name retained) at the University of New Mexico spotted Kerr’s talent and capabilities and awarded him a full athletics scholarship.

During his time at Mexico Collegiate, Kerr won three NCAA titles, set a 150m record, and won the school’s first national win in the indoor mile.

He had another fantastic year, winning his second outdoor 1500m to become the first guy to win both an indoor mile and two outdoor titles, following Leo Manzaro in 2008.
