Juan Izquierdo’s death caused sadness the entire football community worldwide. The Uruguayan footballer died at the age of 27 on Tuesday, August 28, 2024.
His death followed a cardiac arrest, which occurred after he collapsed on the pitch with an irregular heartbeat during a Copa Libertadores match on Thursday. Juan Izquierdo is survived by his wife and two-year-old daughter.
The Uruguayan footballer fell into a coma and was stretchered off the field by an ambulance following a swift intervention by the team’s medical staff. Despite their efforts, Izquierdo’s condition worsened, leading to his death.

In an official statement, Juan Izquierdo’s club, Nacional, announced that he passed away at Sao Paulo’s Hospital Albert Einstein.
The hospital reported that Izquierdo had suffered “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia.”
The club expressed profound grief and shock at the loss, describing Izquierdo as an “irreplaceable loss.”
“It is with deepest pain and shock in our hearts that Club Nacional de Football announces the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo,” the club shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Before his passing, medical doctors had reported that Izquierdo was under neurological critical care and still on a ventilator. On Monday, they noted a “progression of his brain damage and an increase of intracranial pressure.”
Izquierdo played a crucial part in helping the team win its first league title in more than a century in 2023 before passing away during his second spell. He joined National in the 2022–2023 season.
Meanwhile, Juan Izquierdo’s family has yet to comment on the player’s death, revealing the date and time of the funeral and burial service to sympathisers.
