Alexander’s work extended past politics and to the education sector where from 1991 to 2007 he was president of the University of Guelph.

Thirteen years after leaving office and fifty-eight years since arriving in Canada, his many contributions were recognized further when the name of the Ryerson University School of Law was changed to Alexander.

The youth of Lincoln McCauley Alexander was not easy as he was the eldest son of a couple of immigrant Caribbean and became a subject to racial persecution. His determination was visible during his school time, and lessons of resilience have tagged along after his life too.

Specifically, his participation in World War II was the start of his outstanding career.

In 1942, he joined Royal Canadian Air Force as corporal and later radio operator and even rose to overcome prejudice while he was posted at Vancouver. After the end of war, Alexander advanced his study at McMaster University and then proceeded at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto.

His advocacy for equality and leadership was apparent during his days at the graduate school, when he took to task the dean about an offensive utterance.

Alexander ran for the Hamilton West seat in the 1965 Canadian federal election and secured membership to parliament as the very first black within it.

His political career featured important occasions such as his backing of the War Measures Act where at 1970 he later questioned due to its influence on the right.

Alexander stayed principled during his career, sometimes in defiance to his party such as in the case when he supported anti-hate legislation. One of the series of typical challenges was demonstrated in the “Fadl Dadl” episode in House of Representatives.

Alexander stepped down from Parliament in 1980, at the request of Premier Bill Davis, as chair of the Ontario Workers’ Compensation Commission. In 1985, he was put forward by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney for the role of Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, an appointment which made Alexander the first black governor of Canada.

This sees Mr. Alexander engage in activities ranging from visits to the neighbourhood, hosting receptions, to visits to schools. Through his political career, Mr. Alexander holds the position of lieutenant governor, therefore services provided by him focus on multiculturalism of Canada, education priorities, racial justice as well as youth issues.

Lincoln McCauley Alexander, 90, passed away peacefully in sleep on October 19, 2012. He was given a state funeral.

Alexander served as Chairman of the Ontario Workers’ Compensation Board  from 1980 to 1985, overseeing the most significant legislative changes since 1915. His term saw important changes, including support for chiropractors to establish an independent appeals body, despite opposition from the medical community. court.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Alexander was awarded the Order of Ontario and was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1992. His commitment to education was evident when he served as president of the University of Guelph from 1991 until 2007, when he served as president of the University of Guelph beyond his predecessor’s term in 2007. In June 2007, he took over the  position of Rector Emeritus. The torch was handed over to her successor, broadcaster Pamela Wallin.

In  2000, Alexander became chair of  the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and continued to be active in speaking out on issues of race relations and veterans’ concerns. He held the title of Honorary Patron of St John Ambulance Hamilton Branch until his death. He also received the honorary titles of Chief of Police of Hamilton and Chief of Police  of Ontario.

His autobiography, “Go to School, You Little Black Boy: The Honorable Lincoln M. Alexander: A Memoir,” was published in November 2006. The title is an homage to the advice his mother gave him during his childhood.
