After years in political opposition, Buhari re-emerged as a civilian politician. He contested presidential elections in 2003, 2007, and 2011 before securing victory in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His election marked the first time an incumbent president was defeated in Nigeria’s history.

As President from 2015 to 2023, Buhari focused on anti-corruption, economic reform, and counterterrorism, particularly against the Boko Haram insurgency.
