Buhari hailed from the Fulani ethnic group in northern Nigeria. He was the twenty-third child of his father, Mallam Hardo Adamu, a Fulani chieftain, and his mother, Zulaihat.

Raised in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari’s early years were shaped by modest beginnings and the loss of his father at the age of four.

His upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and resilience, traits that would define his future endeavors.

Buhari joined the Nigerian Military Training College in 1962 and quickly rose through the ranks. 

He received further training in the United Kingdom, India, and the United States, eventually attaining the rank of Major General. 

His military career included active service during the Nigerian Civil War and key leadership roles in various divisions.

In December 1983, following a coup d’état, Buhari became Nigeria’s military Head of State. 

His administration was characterized by a strict anti-corruption campaign and the controversial “War Against Indiscipline.”

Though praised for his integrity, his regime faced criticism for its authoritarian methods and suppression of civil liberties.

He was overthrown in August 1985 and subsequently detained for several years.

After years in political opposition, Buhari re-emerged as a civilian politician. He contested presidential elections in 2003, 2007, and 2011 before securing victory in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress (APC). 

His election marked the first time an incumbent president was defeated in Nigeria’s history.

As President from 2015 to 2023, Buhari focused on anti-corruption, economic reform, and counterterrorism, particularly against the Boko Haram insurgency. 

Buhari’s tenure was met with mixed reviews, balancing achievements in infrastructure and governance with challenges in security and economic stability.

Muhammadu Buhari Cause of Death and Legacy

On July 13, 2025, Muhammadu Buhari passed away in a London clinic following a prolonged illness. He was 82 years old. His death marked the end of an era in Nigerian politics, prompting tributes from across the globe. 

He was remembered as a disciplined leader, a reformist, and a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.

Buhari’s legacy remains a subject of national reflection one that continues to influence Nigeria’s democratic evolution and its pursuit of integrity in governance.

Buhari was married twice. His first wife, Safinatu Yusuf, bore him five children before their divorce in 1988. She passed away in 2006. In 1989, he married Aisha Halilu Buhari with whom he had another five children. Buhari was the twenty-third son to his parents Mallam Hardo Adamu (father), a Faulani chief and Zulaihat (mother), a home-taker. Raised in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari lost his parents when he was four years old.

Aisha was born and raised by Nigerian parents Adamawa State in the northeastern Nigeria. Her father was civil engineer while her mother was a descendant of Ankali family who are mostly farmers. 

She attended her primary and secondary education in Adamawa State where she studied there.

Her background bacame marvelous when she obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in public administration from Ambrose Alli university (AAU) and masters degree in international affairs and strategic studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.

Following her marriage to the late Muhammad Buhari, Aisha rose to fame in Nigerian politics. She was an extremely supportive wife and mother to him during their marriage, frequently appearing really platforms to campaign for him.
