Naira Marley  Biography – Azeez Adeshina Fashola, professionally known as Naira Marley, is a British-Nigerian singer and songwriter, recognized as the president of the controversial fan base known as “Marlians.” At the age of 11, Fashola relocated to Peckham, South London, England.

He earned a distinction in Business from Peckham Academy and also pursued Business Law studies at Crossways College, which is now Christ the King Sixth Form College.

Early Career

During his upbringing, Fashola aspired to become an MC and a voice-over artist. His journey into music began in 2014 when he discovered his passion and received encouragement from close friends to pursue a music career.

In 2014, he released the track “Marry Juana” with assistance from Max Twigz, followed by his debut EP, “Gotta Dance.”

In December 2017, he gained significant recognition with the release of the single “Issa Goal,” featuring Olamide and Lil Kesh, which became the theme song for the Super Eagles during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

A remix of “Issa Goal” was launched on June 16, 2018, featuring vocals from Olamide, Lil Kesh, Falz, Simi, and Slimcase. Naira Marley sings in English, Pidgin, and Yoruba, blending Afrobeats and hip-hop in his music.

His stage name pays tribute to Jamaican singer Bob Marley, whom he greatly admires, with his dreadlocks serving as another nod to the iconic artist.

On May 3, 2019, Naira Marley released the track “Am I A Yahoo Boy,” featuring Zlatan, but the same day, he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He later released “Soapy” on June 27, 2019, shortly after his release from prison. In 2020, he won the Viewers’ Choice award for “Soapy” at the 2020 Soundcity MVP Awards.

In December 2019, Naira Marley released his second EP, “Lord of Lamba,” a blend of Afrobeats and hip-hop, featuring guest artists like CBlvck, Young John, and Mayorkun.

During the “Marlian Fest” at Eko Hotels and Suites in December 2019, Naira Marley unveiled his record label, Marlian Records, introducing signed acts CBlvck, Zinoleesky, and Fabian Blu.

On July 10, 2020, he introduced another artist under his label, Emo Grae, with a new single titled “0903” featuring Buju.

Additionally, in June 2021, Naira Marley announced a new album titled “God’s Timing Is The Best,” scheduled for release after the official video for his song “COMING.”


Naira Marley faced legal issues in May 2019 when he, along with Zlatan and others, was arrested by the EFCC, just a day after releasing the controversial single “Am I A Yahoo Boy.”

While Zlatan and three others were released five days later, Naira Marley remained in custody due to evidence against him. On May 16, 2019, he was charged with 11 counts of fraud before a federal high court in Ikoyi, Lagos.

During his time in custody, Zlatan released the single “4 Nights In Ekohtiebo,” reflecting on their industry connections and Marley’s situation. In June 2019, Naira Marley was granted ₦2,000,000 bail and released from jail after 14 days.

In October 2019, Naira Marley returned to court to face the charges, and his case was adjourned to February 27, 2020, after an EFCC witness testified against him.

Subsequently, Naira Marley faced detainment by the Nigerian Police Force for violating the lockdown order imposed by President Muhammadu Buhari to control the spread of COVID-19.

He also performed at a concert in Abuja in June 2020, disregarding interstate travel bans and social distancing rules related to COVID-19. He faced legal action by the FCT Administration over the concert.

In February 2021, reports emerged that the Marley Valentine’s Concert in Cameroon had been canceled by Cameroonian government authorities, citing jealousy among local entertainers towards Nigerian music’s popularity in Cameroon.

On October 5, 2022, Naira Marley faced accusations of assault from his former signee MohBad, who shared pictures and videos of injuries that required hospitalization.

In response, Naira Marley referred to the incident as a “family affair” and suggested that MohBad might have been “high” when making the complaint.

He then took to social media to express his outrage over the bogus claims, blaming some bloggers and news sites for spreading fake information in order to smear his reputation in connection with Mohbad’s death.
