Tragedy struck the boxing community as Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju passed away after suffering a fatal seizure during Bukom Arena boxing match in Accra.
The bout, which was part of the Street 2 Champions Amateur Tournament, saw Olanrewagu face off against Ghanaian fighter John Mbanugu.
The fight took place on Saturday night, March 29, 2025, near Center Point Mall in Accra.
During the match, Olanrewaju endured a series of powerful punches from his opponent before suddenly losing consciousness and collapsing in the ring.
Match officials immediately rushed to his aid and performed Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to revive him.
However, despite their efforts, he remained unresponsive, leading to his tragic passing.
The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) and the wider boxing community have been left devastated by the loss of Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju.
His untimely death has sent shockwaves throughout the sport, raising concerns about safety measures in amateur boxing.
As of now, the Ghana Boxing Federation has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
