Born on August 24, 1963, in Lagos, Nigeria, Peter Rufai who is originally from Oshodi in the Idimu district, began his career at a young age. He began his professional football career with Stationery Stores in 1980, but left after four years to join Femo Scorpions in 1985.

Peter Rufai briefly played for Dragons de l’Ouemé before joining Lokeren and Beveren in 1987 and 1991, respectively.

His career took a turn after joining Go Ahead Eagles in 1993, where he made 12 appearances due to a lack of playing time.

He later spent two years in Spain, playing for clubs like as Hercules and Deportivo La Coruna from 1997 to 1999, before joining Gil Vicente.

Rufai made his international debut for Nigeria in 1983, appearing in 65 matches for the Super Eagles and scoring once on a penalty shot during the team’s (6-0) victory against Ethiopia in the 1993 CAN qualifiers.

After two FIFA World Cups, he was Nigeria’s first choice goalkeeper in 1994 and 1998.

His leadership and unwavering presence in goal were vital to the Nigerian National Team’s victory at the 1994 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
