Ruth Gemmell married late actor Ray Stevenson (1964-2023) in Westminster, London in 1997. They met while filming the TV show Band of Gold in 1995. The couple shared two children before breaking up in 2005.
Ruth Katrin Gemmell was born in Bristol in October 1967 and grew up in County Durham, first in Barnard Castle and later, after her parents split, in Darlington. She is youngest of three siblings.
She attended Polam Hall School. Gemmell then relocated to London, where her father lived, in order to pursue a career as an actor. She studied at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.
