Born on 26 October 1969 in The Hag, Netherlands. Sarina has been coaching the England women’s national team since September 2021. Wiegmann began her playing career as a central midfielder before switching to defence.
She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1989 and was a member of the Tar Heels women’s soccer team. After returning to the Netherlands, she joined the Ter Rede women’s squad in addition to her a job as a physical education teacher.
She won the Dutch Championship and the KNVB Cup once each. Ter Reid Wiegmann represented the Netherlands from 1987 to 2001. She won 104 caps for her country (which was first recognised by the KNVB), however the caps she won against opponents not affiliated with FIFA are less than the official limit.
So it is slightly under a century old. After retiring in 2003, Wiegmann began coaching the Tell Reid and ADO Den Haag women’s teams.
She was named the Dutch women’s team’s deputy national coach in 2014. Wiegman became the first woman to lead a professional soccer team in the Netherlands after obtaining a full coaching licence in 2016.
Wiegmann won the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017 as the Dutch national team’s coach. Two years later, the team came second at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In August 2020, it was reported that Wiegman would take over as the England women’s national team manager from September 2021, following the end of Phil Neville’s contract.
She also coached the Netherlands at the Olympics and wanted to win a medal in 2020, but the team was ousted in the quarterfinals.
She later became England’s coach, leading the Lionesses to victory at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 in her home country. This was England’s first senior team title, whether male or female, since the men’s team won the FIFA World Cup in 1966.
