Born on August 26, 1954, Steve Wright was best known for introducing the zoo format to British radio, he brought a ‘crazy’, multi-character approach that captivated audiences.

Wright was the host of “Steve Wright in Afternoon” on BBC Radio 1 for 12 years and appeared on BBC Radio 2 for 23 years becoming a fixture on one of the UK’s most popular radio stations until September 30, 2022.

His influence extended to television, where he hosted programs as diverse as “Home Truths,” “The Steve Wright People Show,” “Auntie’s TV Favorites,” and “Top of the Pops”.

Wright has won numerous awards, including winning Best DJ of the Year in the 1994, Daily Mirror Readers and Smash Hits Poll’ vote, and in 1998 he won the DJ of the Year award on the radio show TRIC. He has won the Personality of the Year Award.

Wright’s career began in 1980 on BBC Radio 1 and peaked in 1981 with “Steve Wright in the Afternoon”, which marked the introduction of the zoo format to the UK. The format evolved over the years, showcasing his irreverent style and culminated in the hit single “I’ll Be Back”, released under the name Arnee and the Terminaters.

Faced with a period of transition, Wright joined the Radio 1 Breakfast Show in 1994, but disagreements with BBC Radio 1 management caused him to resign in 1995.

Still he found a new home on radio with his Talk  in 1995 and continued his radio journey producing syndicated shows on various  commercial stations in the UK.

His employment at BBC Radio 2 began in 1996, where he presented Steve Wright’s Saturday Show and Steve Wright’s Sunday Love Songs.

Despite the changing landscape at Radio 2, Wright’s popularity continued into his 2022 year. In July 2022, Wright announced the end of Steve Wright in the Afternoon, to be replaced by a new show starring Scott Mills.

However, he remained at Radio 2, hosting Sunday Love Songs, a podcast called Serious Jockin’, seasonal specials, and other projects.

On August 10, 2023, it was announced that Wright would be the new host of Pick of the Pops, replacing Paul Gambaccini.

In addition to radio, Wright made his mark on televisio as the narrator and writer of Top of the Pops 2 and host of the Steve Wright People Show.

Wright’s involvement in British chart hits including “I’ll Be Back” showcased his diverse talents and proved that his influence extended beyond the airwaves.

On February 12, 2024, the world said goodbye to this legendary. This ended a remarkable career that spanned decades and left a legacy that touched the hearts of many. However Steve Wright’s cause of death has not been made publicly at the time filling this report. The family are also yet to release his Obituary.
