Theresah Kufuor, born on October 25, 1935 in Ghana to Ghanaian parents, began her career at a young age. She started her education Catholic Convent, OLA, at Keta in the Volta Region of Ghana. She later went to London, where she was educated as a Registered General Nurse, in the Southern Hospital Group of Nursing, Edinburgh, Scotland.

She became a State Certified Midwife with a Certificate in Premature Nursing after further studies at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford and Paddington General Hospital in London. She later retired from the nursing and midwifery jobs after more than 30 years of service to the institution.

Despite serving as Ghana’s first lady for eight years, from 2001 to 2009, she has kept a low profile in the political sphere. In 2007, she advocated for policy changes in the Government’s White Paper on Educational Reforms in order to implement UNESCO’s Free compulsory universal basic education (FCUBE) programme for kindergarten students.

She founded the Mother and Child Community Development Foundation (MCCDF), a non-governmental organisation that works to prevent mother-to-child transmission in Ghana and Canada.

The former First Lady Theresah Kufuor died peacefully at her home in Peduase surrounded by her family on Sunday October 1. There was no indications that he suffered a brief illness according to report.

Her death brought an outpouring of condolences from across the country and beyond as well as the New Patriotic Party NPP who threw their support to her over the years.
