Actress Clara Benson, popularly known as Maame Serwaa, burst into tears while recounting the death of her mother, Rose Benson, about eight years ago.
In an emotional interview with Emelia Brobbey, posted on YouTube on Monday February 17, 2025, Maame Serwaa claims that people falsely accused her of killing her biological mother.
According to her, the rumours drove her to the brink of depression, leading to suicidal thoughts.
“Things became more difficult for me when my mother died because she was the one who made me popular. I was hurt when i heard people spreading fake news that i was the one who killed my mother or used her for rituals. Let’s say i wasn’t who i am today or i was someone normal. Would people still say such things about me? She questioned.
She said the backlash took a severe toll on her mental health, leading her to contemplate suicide on multiple occasions.
“I felt really bad. There were times I would look at myself in the mirror and ask, ‘Am I a bad person?’ I tried to harm myself on so many occasions. I felt that I had lost a part of myself.
“The people around me were even restricting me from my phone because they didn’t want me to see the things circulating about me online,” she revealed as quoted by GhanaWeb.
Maame Serwaa lost her mother Rose Benson on December 7, 2017 after suffering a brief illness.
She was buried on Saturday, January 20, 2017 at Atwema Koforidua in the Ashanti Region.
