Doja Cat gained viral success with her 2018 single “Mooo!” after a stint away from music and a fairly lacklustre release of her first studio album, “Amala” (2018). She capitalised on her burgeoning success by releasing her second studio album, “Hot Pink,” the following year.

The album charted on the Billboard 200 in the United States, and the remix of the track “Say So” featuring Nicki Minaj peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Her third studio album, “Planet Her” (2021), was a commercial success, with singles such as “Kiss Me More” and “Need to Know.”

Doja Cat released her fourth studio album, “Scarlet,” in 2023, which featured the blockbuster single “Paint the Town Red,” marking her first solo number-one on the Hot 100 and receiving recognition for her bold visual presence and technical rap talents.

Doja Cat’s online persona and performances on platforms such as TikTok have contributed to her international fame, with The Wall Street Journal describing her as a “competent technical rapper with a great melodic sense and a bold visual presence.” She has received numerous honours, including a Grammy Award and distinction as one of the world’s most influential people by Time in 2023.

Doja Cat’s journey began with self-learning, song creation on SoundCloud, and navigating the Los Angeles hip-hop culture. Her debut EP, “Purrr!,” received a lot of attention, which led to collaborations and releases. Despite early setbacks, her determination, distinct style, and internet interaction propelled her to prominence in the music industry.

Doja Cat reflected on her career, describing her early challenges after dropping out of school, emphasising her dedication to music and negotiating the industry’s complexity. Her debut with “Mooo!” and subsequent albums cemented her position as a key performer of the 2020s.

Doja Cat explored several musical forms as she evolved, and her albums “Hot Pink” and “Planet Her” demonstrated her versatility. Her popularity with “Say So,” collaborations with other musicians, and impact on social media platforms all helped her gain international recognition and multiple honours.

With the release of “Scarlet” and its smash single “Paint the Town Red” in 2023, Doja Cat began a new phase. Her influence extended beyond music, with her presenting the MTV Video Music Awards in 2021 and collaborations in numerous areas of entertainment.

Doja Cat has acknowledged her influences throughout her career, naming musicians such as Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes, Rihanna, Beyoncé, and others. She emphasised the significance of flexibility in her artistic legacy, including visual art and dance in her repertory.

Despite her achievements, Doja Cat has been open about her career’s struggles and burnout, sharing her thoughts about the industry’s demands. She teased her fourth studio album, “Hellmouth,” in early 2023, adopting a darker sound and promising a return to her rap roots.

Doja Cat’s musical style, which has been defined as a mix of hip hop, pop, R&B, and pop rap, has demonstrated her flexibility. “Hot Pink,” her second album, heralded a new beginning in her career, reflecting changes in her lifestyle and artistic expression.

What is Doja Cat’s Ethnicity?

Doja Cat comes from a mixed family. Her mother, Deborah Sawyer, is a Jewish American graphic artist, and her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is a Zulu performer best known for his appearance in the musical Sarafina!

Dumisani and Deborah had a brief romance in New York City, resulting in Amala and her brother being raised mostly by her mother.

In contrast to her father’s assertions of a healthy relationship, Amala has expressed a sense of estrangement, claiming she never met him. Her early years included a five-year stay in Rye, New York, with her maternal grandmother, an architect. She moved back to California when she was eight, and lived in a Hindu commune for four years. Despite engaged in spiritual practises, she felt a lack of normalcy and struggled with childhood constraints.

As one of the few mixed-race children in the neighbourhood, she suffered racial prejudice when she moved to Oak Park. Her adolescence was filled with athletics, dance, and online activities , such as chatroom participation. Her aunt, a voice instructor, encouraged her to take singing lessons, which helped her get into a performing arts high school. However, after struggling with ADHD and feeling detached from traditional education, she made the audacious decision to drop out at the age of 16, realising that her true interest lied in performing and singing.

Is Doja Cat South African?

Yes. She is of South African descent. Cat is named after her father, who is from South Africa. Her mother is Jewish and has become a US citizen.
