Robert Nairac Biography, Early Life & Career
Captain Robert Nairac was born on August 31, 1948, in Mauritius, Britain, and raised by his parents, Barbara (mother) and Maurice (father).
His mother is of English heritage and was a devout Anglican Christian, whilst his father, a Catholic, worked as an eye surgeon and is also a Mauritanian by nationality.
Robert Nairac grew up with three older siblings (two sisters and one brother). His brother David died of Myocarditis at the age of 24 in 1962, with symptoms such as shortness of breath and chest pain.
During his time, Nairac was married to Nel Lister, also known as Oonagh Flynn or Oonagh Lister. The couple had only one child before Nairac died tragically.
Nairac’dm’s family provided him with the greatest schooling possible after they relocated to Sunderland, where he developed an interest for Army work. He went to prep school at Gilling Castle.
He excelled academically, which led to him becoming the leader of his house and participating in school rugby.
During his tertiary study at Lincoln College, Oxford, Nairac studied mediaeval and military history and excelled in sports.
Following his graduation from Oxford University in 1971, Nairac began his military career at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, sponsored by the Grenadier Guards.
He served his first tour in Northern Ireland with No.1 Company, the Grenadier Guards’ second Battalion.
His unit deployment was deemed a success because no casualties were reported and no one was shot.
Robert Nairac Cause of Death
Nairac died on May 15, 1977, during an undercover operation, after being beaten and shot by the IRA.
Nairac’s body has never been found since his death following abduction, causing him to undertake his first search in 2024.
The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims Remains (ICLVR) is conducting a search to investigate and find Nairac’s remains, which have been missing since 1977.
