Joan Laporta has resigned as President of FC Barcelona in accordance with Article 42.f of the club’s statutes, which requires a current president must step down in order be eligible to contest for the club’s Board of Directors.
According to an official statement released on Monday, February 9, 2026, Laporta’s resignation was submitted so that he may legally stand as a candidate in the upcoming FC Barcelona Board elections scheduled on March 15.
The resignation was formally approved at the club’s regular Board of Directors meeting on Monday, where the election process and official call for candidates were also announced.
Laporta did not resign due to a scandal or internal crisis, despite his leadership being marked by financial instability and trophy hauls since taking over the office.
He stepped down only to comply with FC Barcelona’s internal regulations and texting rules, allowing him to participate in the next presidential and board elections.
Laporta was voted into power on his second term as a president in 2021 to resolve a mire debt in order to make drastic cutbacks in terms of the Barcelona’s spending to escape for (Financial Fair Play) policy
He led the election with 54.3%, defeating Victor Fonts (30%) and Tony Freixa (9%).
His first stint as Barcelona president began in 2013 and ended after seven years under coach Pep Guardiola and players such as Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta, during which time the club was regarded as the best in the world.
Other contenders for the Barcelona presidential elections this year include Victor Font, Xavi Vilajoana, and Marc Ciria, all of whom are ready to compete with Laporta in the race.
Currently, Rafa Yuste is currently serving as interim president until Laporta returns for Barcelona’s match against Sevilla on March 15, if he wins the election.
