Born on 9th November 1987 in East London, South Africa, Zahara started her singing career at an early age where she joined school choir at age six.
She was asked to join senior choir due to her unique voice after three years later where she gained a moniker “blooming flower” as well as her nickname “Spinach”
Zahara gained a recognition following the released of her debut album “Loliwe” in 2011 after being signed to label TS Records by TK Ncizaza.

She passed away at the hospital at the age of 36, having been admitted due to liver issues stemming from years of alcohol addiction, the country’s minister of culture announced.
The Afro-pop sensation, renowned for her impactful ballads and numerous platinum-selling albums in South Africa, grappled with liver complications linked to her struggle with alcohol addiction.
She had been under medical care since last month and succumbed to her condition on Monday.
Zizi Kodwa, South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, who conveyed the news of her demise, stated that the government had been providing support to Zahara’s family for an extended period.
‘I am very saddened by the passing of Zahara,’ Kodwa said. ‘My deepest condolences to the Mkutukana family and the South African music industry.
‘Government has been with the family for some time now. Zahara and her guitar made an incredible and lasting impact in South African music.’
Last month, Zahara’s manager Oyama Dyosiba confirmed the singer had been hospitalised ‘following complaints about physical pains’.
Zahara had suffered liver disease after battling alcohol addiction for years.
Her sister Nomande said in 2019 that doctors had told her: ‘If Zahara continues drinking, she is going to die. We are making sure that there is always someone around her to monitor her so that she doesn’t start drinking again.’
Zahara had been self-taught in playing the guitar and won album of the year at the South African Music awards for her debut album Loliwe.
In 2013, she delivered the title track for Nelson Mandela at his residence prior to his passing.
Zahara also actively advocated against violence targeting women in South Africa, characterizing it as a ‘pandemic’ in the country in 2020. She shared a distressing incident where she was assaulted by a man who pepper-sprayed her in his vehicle
