Vybz Kartel has spoken out for the first time after serving a 13-year prison sentence, admitting that he was afraid to die in prison due to his terrible environment, including his health health issues and filthy environment.
According to the reports, Kartel was told by his personal doctor that his heart rate, functioning at approximately 37%, which he reported in an affidavit during his recent concluded case before the Court of Appeals.
“This has caused me to be scared and unsure of my existence,” he told Jamaica Gleaner
Vybes Kartel explains the way he was confined to a prison cell with rats, bedbugs, and roaches that bothered him while asleep, and how he had to relieved himself in bottles or disposable plastic bags.
“It is my fervent hope that I will not die within the precincts of the prison and that I will be afforded an opportunity to get the medical intervention that is needed to save my life,” — he added.
Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer reveals how prison officers stripped him of his dignity, claiming that there were no bathroom facilities, poor ventilation, and bad lighting in the cell he was placed in.
“I had to urinate in a bottle and pass my stool in a celebrity news bag … and this contributed greatly to the deterioration of my health,” Kartel said, citing the medical opinion from his doctor.
“The cell is a literal oven and each day I felt like I was being burnt alive. The smell of sewage never goes away and there is never a day that I do not feel ill in addition to my medical issues,” he added.
The acclaimed dancehall entertainer also describes being placed in a cell with a toilet in his dying days after being transferred to solitary detention with his already “fragile health.”
“I am left with my thoughts and every day I am faced with the fact of my mortality and the fear that I might end up dying in prison having never had the opportunity to hold my grandchildren and watch my children continue to grow,” he said,
In disclosing that he has seven children and two grandchildren Vybz Kartel says ; I have missed almost 13 years of their lives already.”
