The Ghana Freedom Party has officially withdrawn from the December 7 elections to honor its late founder and flagbearer, Akua Donkor.
The announcement came on Monday, November 5, 2024. The party, previously holding the number 3 spot on the ballot, named Philip Kwabena Agyemang, popularly known as “Roman Fada,” as Donkor’s replacement and new presidential candidate.
In announcing their step down from the election, the party said in a statement that “The National Executive Committee of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) in consultation with the family of our late flagbearer, Mad. Akua Donkor, has decided to withdraw from the impending December Parliamentary and Presidential elections.
They continued “This decision, irrespective of how difficult it may be, has been reached to posthumously honour the commitment and sacrifices by our late Founder and Presidential Candidate as the only person to send her candidature to grave”.
They added “We are by this letter formally informing the Commission of our intention not to participate in the elections”.
The party then apologized to it members and voters for “any inconveniences this decision may have caused the Commission and its calendar for the December 7 elections is deeply regretted”.
It was reveal that, despite falling short and pulling out from the race they will contest and “participate in the future elections organized by the Electoral Commission.”
However, with this withdrawal from the presidential race, the ballot positions for other candidates are expected to be affected.
Akua Donkor’s death has brought an unexpected shift in the party’s approach.
Prior to her death, there were concerns among political observers that certain candidates might be influenced to step out of the race to alter ballot positions in the upcoming election.
Now, the Ghana Freedom Party’s decision to withdraw appears intended to honor Donkor’s legacy, although specific reasons for the move have not been disclosed by party leaders or executives.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament has yet to issue a ruling on whether the ballot position will remain vacant or if further adjustments will be made to reflect the new developments.
