Pope Francis health condition is currently in critical as Vatican gives an update in a statement released on Saturday , February 22, 2025.
The 88-year-old Catholic Church head who has was hospitalized last week suffered a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis after being treated with pneumonia last week.
Pope received “high flows” of oxygen to help him breathe,” the Vatican in a late update said in a statement as quoted by APNews.
He also “received blood transfusions after tests showed low counts of platelets, which are needed for clotting”
“The Holy Father’s condition continues to be critical, therefore, as explained yesterday (Friday), the pope is not out of danger,” the statement said.
It was the first time “critical” had been used in a written statement to describe Francis’ condition since he was hospitalized Feb. 14.
The statement also added that the pontiff “continues to be alert and spent the day in an armchair although in more pain than yesterday.” Doctors declined to offer a prognosis, saying it was “reserved.”
Doctors have said Francis’ condition is touch-and-go, given his age, fragility and pre-existing lung disease.
The Vatican carried on with its Holy Year celebrations without the pope on Saturday.
Doctors have warned that the main threat facing Francis would be the onset of sepsis, a serious infection of the blood that can occur as a complication of pneumonia.
As of Friday, there was no evidence of any sepsis, and Francis was responding to the various drugs he is taking, the pope’s medical team had said.
Since the news of Pope Francis health condition update surfaced was made known, many high-ranking figures have offered their prayers to the Pope to regain his health.
White House press secretary Karonline Leavitt is one of them who supported him in prayers saying “We are praying for the pope” and revealed that Donald Trump will be releasing his official statement to address it.
Pope Francis health update however has also left some of the Catholic leaders and members devastated despite responding positively to life-threatening and treatment to prevent a serious consequences.
