Ghanaian long-distance swimmer Seidu Dauda Bayigo is preparing to make history by attempting to swim from Ghana to the United States (USA), aiming to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest swimming marathon by an individual.
The announcement was made through Dauda’s TikTok page where he shared a promotional flyer for his upcoming Swimathon, scheduled to begin on June 6, 2025.
In a separate social media post, Bayigo was seen in a full swim costume sporting a wetsuit and dark googles while training in a local river.
His demonstration swim drew applause from the onlookers as he showcased the skills he’s been honing over the years.
According to Bayigo, he has swum from town to town in Ghana multiple times, building the endurance and confidence needed for this transatlantic journey.
He expressed his determination to break the world record, fueled by years of experience and rigorous training.
The challenge will see him cross the Atlantic Ocean, covering an estimated 8,400 kilometers (5,200 miles) from the coast of Ghana to the shores of the USA.
With this, Seidu would have to swim continuously for 365 days before reaching the United States.
If successful, Seidu Dauda Bayigo will surpass the current record held by Nejib Belhedi, who swam for 76 hours and 30 minutes from September 15 to 18, 2018.
Belhedi covered 120 kilometers (75 miles) across the Gulf of Gabes in Tunisia, from Sfax to the island of Djerba.
In reaction to Bayigo’s swimathon attempt, many people have sent him well wishes, while others argue that his path is significantly more hazardous crossing the open Atlantic, which appears to be impossible.
